RegionThree: Make Your 3DS Region Free

A good friend of mine Anne (awesome blogger of Chic Pixel) told me about Region Three so many thanks to her! I’m sure most of you Nintendo 3DS users understand the pain of region lock: not being able to play games from Japan, having to fork out more money to buy a second (or third) 3DS just to play games that wouldn’t come to your region…

But with Region Three Loader, you can make your 3DS/3DSXL/2DS (does not work on the New Nintendo 3DS unfortunately) console region free. Yeap, I’m not kidding. It requires no game or flashcard – just a file on your SD card, an Internet connection, your game cartridge and you’re good to go! I have tried it out myself on my Japanese 3DS XL and was able to load AND play Persona Q, Pokemon Omega Ruby and Animal Crossing which are all Australian versions (language was English). One exception though is Tomodachi Collection which will give you an error no matter what, but every other game loads fine.

This is great for people who don’t have a second 3DS and want to import games! However, I don’t doubt that Nintendo will patch this in the future but rest assured any game you play will still be saved into your game cartridge.

Happy gaming!

Wow, thank you so much for the tip! I’m definitely going to give it a try. But is there a risk of the 3DS never being able to play any kind of games again – no matter the region – once Nintendo updates their system…?

Hi! You’re welcome! I’m sure that if/when Nintendo patches the loader, the console will just go back to being a region-locked console. It will not get bricked aka. Nintendo will not block your console since this does not promote piracy or free downloading of any games. You have nothing to worry about really!!

Currently looking to import both Taiko no Tatsujin and Tales of the World Reve Unitia – do you have any other suggestion of Japan-only 3DS game worth buying?
I know in 2015 there will be a new game for Prince of Tennis, also a Corda 3 version, but I would like to know more about past-released games.

Hi there! Yes it is possible as I believe both AUS and EUR versions are the same. The language is still English, so the original language of the cartridge :) Hope this helps!

Google the following words: regionthree compatibility wiki

There is a community-driven list of games and their behavior with Regionthree – Animal Crossing is said to malfunction, so please watch out!
